About the Author:
Paul Carmody was born in Adelaide and educated in Port Pirie, a city nestled at the foot of the Flinders Ranges on Spencer Gulf in South Australia.
He studied at Flinders University in Adelaide and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Physics, and a Diploma in Education.
He has subsequently been a Physics teacher in rural South Australia and Queensland, and is presently teaching in Brisbane.
He has had a lifetime interest in the incredible voyages of Matthew Flinders, the scientist and adventurer. In recent times, when the national debate about the appropriateness of Australia Day has been prominent in the media, Paul wondered whether the man who named Australia should have more recognition in the national consciousness.
In particular he wondered whether Matthew Flinders’ indelible contribution to our history should be the central focus of Australia Day, so that all Australians, regardless of ancestry, could unite behind one concept for the celebration of the day.
This website is the culmination of his research.
